Tabasco is bordered by the Mexican states of Veracruz to the west, Chiapas to the south, and Campeche to the north-east. To the east Tabasco borders with the Petén department of Guatemala, and to the north is the Gulf of Mexico. Tabasco is in the northern half of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec.

Cities in Tabasco include: Ciudad Pemex, Cardenas, Emiliano Zapata, Macuspana, San Miguel, Tenosique, and Tortuguero.

Villahermosa ("Beautiful Village" in Spanish language) is the capital city of Tabasco, Mexico, and the municipal seat of Centro municipality. 

Tabasco's political powers reside here. It is the main city of Tabasco state and gathers its largest population. The city is an important business center for Mexican oil industry. Also known as La Esmeralda del Sureste (The Emerald of Southeast), Villahermosa is a modern city rich in natural resources, both for agriculture and farming.

History

Founded officially on June 24, 1596 by Spaniards on the banks of Grijalva River under the name of Villa Hermosa; in 1826 the village was raised to the rank of city under the name of San Juan Bautista (Saint John the Baptist). The city was captured and occupied by U.S. forces after the battle of Tabasco during the Mexican-American War. During the French intervention in Mexico, French troops occupied the city. In 1915, the governor of Tabasco, Francisco J. Mújica ordered to change the name of the city to its current name Villahermosa.

Currently Villahermosa is a major important and modern city in the Southeast of the Mexican Republic. Villahermosa is known for its joyful people which characteristic is the warm welcome to outsiders and the ability to joyfully celebrate life.
